Individual Counseling

Individual mental health counseling is a therapeutic process where a person works one-on-one with a licensed therapist to address and manage personal mental health concerns. The focus is on helping the individual gain insight into their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, and develop coping strategies to improve their overall well-being.

In individual counseling, a variety of techniques may be used, depending on the therapist’s approach and the person’s needs. Common methods include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, or mindfulness-based techniques. The sessions provide a safe, confidential space where the individual can explore issues such as anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, trauma, stress, relationship challenges, self-esteem, or other personal difficulties.

The goals of individual counseling vary but generally include helping the person:

Understand their feelings and thoughts: Gain clarity about what’s contributing to emotional or mental health challenges.

Develop coping strategies: Learn practical tools to manage stress, anxiety, or other difficulties.

Improve emotional regulation: Work on managing emotions in a healthy way.

Resolve past trauma or unresolved issues: Address any emotional baggage that may be impacting present well-being.

Enhance self-awareness: Build a deeper understanding of oneself and one’s motivations, behaviors, and patterns.

Individual counseling can be a short-term or long-term process, depending on the individual’s needs, and it offers a personalized approach to achieving mental and emotional growth.

Couples Counseling

Couple’s counseling aims to improve communication and reduce conflict within a relationship. Common themes addressed include poor communication, lack of intimacy , infidelity, and challenges in managing stress. In couples sessions, the therapist facilitates the discussions between the partners to understand the underlying issues and develop strategies for change.

Sessions provide tools and aim to improve the relationship, whether it be a new couple- or partners that have been married for decades. Methods commonly used include both Gottman based training, as well as Emotionally Focused Therapy.

Couples Collaborative Counseling

Collaborative couples counseling is an approach to therapy where both partners work together with their individual therapist to improve their relationship. Couples sessions are held with both partners and their therapists to apply the lessons learned individually to the relationship. As with traditional couples counseling, a key aspect of this method is a focus on cooperation and mutual understanding, rather than placing blame or trying to “win” an argument. It involves open communication, active listening, and a shared commitment to resolving conflicts in a respectful and productive way.

The approach can be especially beneficial for couples as it provides the most well rounded approach to both couples and individual therapy.
